I've had one of those exceptionally busy days!
I'm sure you've all experienced them. The ones where no matter how quickly you type, no matter how efficient you are trying to be, and no matter how many people are on hand to help you just can't seem to make a dent in the pile of work sitting there, the pile of work that (if anything) seems to be growing.
It was actually my mother who was offering me advice today. During a very brief phone-call she made to me as I was mid multi-tasking 3 very important things, she calmly said.. "just prioritise what you need to do. The rest can wait". Unfortunately my blunt and slightly shrill reply was "No it can't, Mother. Absolutely NOTHING can wait!" Now as the working day draws to an end and a nice cup of tea has calmed me down, I know I need to call her back and apologise for being slightly dramatic.
The problem I have found terribly difficult since starting my own business is the relinquishing control and delegating of work. When you start a company which you are so utterly proud of, which you live minute by minute and which no-body understands quite like you do, handing over the reigns just for a little while can be a gut-wrenching experience. I was recently recommended a book by a fellow Everywoman Winner, Muse and new found Friend Archie Archer, "The E-Myth Revisited" which explains how a business just cannot grow until you allow other people into your world that is your business. Looking at my workload from today, realistically I could have handed 50% of it over.. but my own control freak tendencies prevented me from doing this.
Tomorrows goal? Stop making things a priority when they shouldn't even be sitting on my desk. Delegation is going to be my new middle name!
p.s. I have a new iPad app which my other half find hilarious. Post It notes, which I can colour code and display on my iPad screen. His comment.. "why couldn't you just get some post-it notes and stick them on your iPad?!" I really didn't have a sensible answer.
