Forensic Inspiration

Speaking to Swansea College students

I already work as a Welsh Government Dynamo Role Model but I took particular pleasure in speaking to a group of amazing forensic/medical students last week who were really passionate!! They may my job a lot easier when they are enthused and willing to learn. One particular girl was in a wheelchair and asked me if she would be able to get a job in forensics because she was worried that her disability would hold her back. I stated that she need not worry about her disability, it is what is in her head that counts. Her only possible issues with lab work would be if she wanted to work in a DNA lab as her chair would not be sterile for the anti contamination process, but this would be the issue of the lab manager, not for her. She would also have issues with crime scene investigation, but this is only one tiny part of the forensic process so she has plenty of other areas that she can work in. She was incredibly dedicated and I have no doubt that she will do brilliantly in her career. Interestingly it was the females in the room who were commenting on setting up their own businesses, or working privately. I feel my job there was done!
